Norman Mckinell's play 'The Bishop's Candlesticks' depict was the story of a convict who was transformed into a man of humane heart by the generosity and kindness shown to him by a Bishop.
When asked about his past by the Bishop, the convict said that long ago, he lived in a little cottage with his wife Jeanete. Once she was very ill and he stole food for her as he had no money. The police caught him and he was sentenced to ten years imprisonment. The night he was sentenced, he was informed about his wife's death. The news totally broke his heart.
Again in prison, which he called a hell, he was chained up like a hound. He slept on boards and was fed on filth. When he complained about it, he was lashed again.
The convict added that he was at first a man, but in prison he was transformed into a devil. Without his name, his soul, he became a mere number 15729. But six weeks ago, when they forgot to chain him up, he escaped from jail. Then again he the woods, in borns,etc. Thus, both behind and outside bars, the convict was living a miserable life.
